On Simultaneous Submission
Abstract
The aim of this note is to remind and explain that authors have an obligation to make sure their manuscript is based on original research, which means it is never before published. Intentionally submitting or re-submitting a manuscript for more than publication is considered a violation of publishing ethics.
Until the date of publishing this editorial instruction, we faced three simultaneous publishing and submitting cases with our UJPR journal. As a result, the manuscripts submitted to our journal were removed from consideration and the authors attended from publishing in our UJPR journal in the future. As a result, as well, we wanted to put the following brief instruction that talks and explains about simultaneous submission:
Simultaneous submission occurs when a researcher or researchers submit their manuscript to different publications at the same time, which may result in more than one journal publishing for that particular manuscript. Duplicate or multiple publication occurs when more papers share essentially the same hypotheses, discussion points, data and even conclusion. It should be noted that this could be occur in different degrees: literal duplication, partial but substantial duplication, or duplication through paraphrasing.
Among many reasons, one of the main reasons why duplicate publication of the original research is considered unethical is that it can lead to unintended double-counting or inappropriate weighting of the results of a single study, distorting the available evidence.
Besides, it is worth mentioning that there are some situations in which the Publishers of more than one journal might agree in advance to use the duplicate work. These include:
- Combined editorials e.g. about a plagiarism case involving more than one journal.
- Guidelines, statements.
- Translations of articles provided that prior approval has been granted by the first
Publisher and that complete prominent disclosure of its original source is given at the time of submission.
Thus, the approximate methods or let say the rule of thumb is as follows: (i) articles submitted for publication should be original publication and must have not been submitted elsewhere. (ii) At the time of submission, authors/authors should disclose any details of related manuscripts (as well even in a different language), similar papers in press and translations.
While the boundaries around duplicate publication may vary from field to another, all Publishers have requirements for submitting papers. It is a good idea to make sure you fully understand them to avoid violating the process.
Finally, as the founder and editor-in-chief of the UJPR journal, I will spare no effort to explain and clarify things and work to building this journal and following the roadmap that was established by some ideas and theories and suggestions in the right direction of the scientific research towards spreading science and knowledge.
