Acceptance of a Prescription for Smoking Cessation Utilizing an iPad Educational Application

Tobacco use, especially smoking, poses an enormous threat to public health. Research indicates tobacco use is linked to many illnesses and premature death. It also has unhealthy consequences in non-smokers through second-hand exposure. Primary care clinicians have the “golden opportunities” to intervene during office visit encounters. This study examined the use of an iPad educational application in tobacco cessation counseling that would increase acceptance of a prescription to aid with cessation, compared to the traditional method of counseling only. Utilizing smoking cessation guidelines, a descriptive quantitative exploratory methodology was used in two phases to assess the effectiveness of tobacco cessation education in a traditional verbal counseling versus the additional use of a mobile application along with standard tobacco cessation counseling in a primary care clinical setting. Total of 49 participants were recruited in two different groups. The standard cessation counseling had 29 subjects for Phase I and 20 participants in the enhanced tobacco cessation education group in Phase II. The enhanced tobacco cessation education with an iPad was more effective in smoking education than the traditional standard verbal counseling on smoking cessation. The addition of a mobile device with relevant educational materials shared with smokers by clinicians have shown an increase in acceptance of a prescription to aid tobacco cessation. Clinicians are strongly encouraged to find innovative ways to help smoking patients accept aids in successful cessation attempts.

Qualitatively the study adopted a case study research design to examine the parental factors that motivate female students to complete formal education in Tolon District. The population for this study comprised of all females in the Tolon District who have successfully completed formal education. A purposive sampling technique was used to select ten (10) females who have successfully completed formal education and are now working in the Tolon District. The main instrument used for data collection was interview. Data were analysed by the use of the Interpretive Method based on the themes arrived at during the data collection. The themes were related to the research question and interpreted on the number of issues raised by respondents. The study revealed that, financial support of parents was vital to enrolment, sustenance and ultimate completion of the education of females. The study also indicated that parents give support in the form of guidance and counseling as well as moral support through encouragement of the Girl-Child played a key role to their successful education. It is recommended that, parents still need more advocacies on the importance of educating the girl child in order to enhance their interest in sending or motivating the girl child in school. It is also recommended that parents should discouraged early marriages to help girls to fully complete their formal education.

The aim of the present research through the study of the mastectomy experience of women with breast cancer, is the investigation of its consequences in women who took part, as well as the role of counseling therapy in promoting mental their health. Five women voluntarily participated in semi-structured interviews, which they had undergone mastectomy and attended counseling. For in the analysis of the interviews, the Phenomenological Analysis was used. From the analysis of the interviews, it became clear that mastectomy brings about both physical changes, from the sensation of breast loss, as well as changes in their mental world, as their mental health is directly affected in awareness of breast removal. Therefore, the provision of advisory support is one of the main factors contributing to the relief of psychological symptoms, controlling negative thoughts and reducing negative one’s emotions experienced by women. Through the therapeutic process the women besides promoting their mental health, know themselves better through the eyes of others (partner, family). The results of the research contribute significantly to the theoretical and objective understanding of the mastectomy experience, as they highlight important aspects of it her experience regarding the negative effects of mastectomy. Simultaneously highlight the special importance of providing psychological support in order to strengthening their mental world. Finally, they reveal its necessity conducting qualitative research to further explore and understand the experience of women who have undergone a mastectomy.

Parental anxiety and depression are factors that significantly affect the practice of parental role and have an impact on the upbringing of children and their quality of life. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the counseling intervention that parents received during their participation in parent school programs reduced stress and depressive symptoms and improved their quality of life. A sample of 160 parents was collected from two independent groups: the experimental group consisting of 80 parents who participated in the program and the control group consisting of parents who after being informed about the implementation of the programs in their schools decided not to participate. The psychometric tools have been used are: The Spielberger Stress Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Beck depression Inventory (BDI), and the Health and well-being Questionnaire (The RAND 36-Item Healthy Survey, SF-36, Version 1.0). The results of the research confirmed the research hypothesis according to which the effect of the counseling intervention on the parents who participated in the parent schools affected the reduction of the stress index, state anxiety (Ζ=-2,882, p=0,004) and trait anxiety (Ζ=-3,776, p<0,001), the reduction of the depression index (Ζ=-6,876, p<0,001) and the improvement of their quality of life(Ζ=-5,364, p<0,001) ) especially of physical health (Ζ=-4,529, p<0,001) and emotional health (Ζ=-4,529, p<0,001).

The purpose of the study was to assess Academic achievement of Low- Social-Economic-Status (SES) of Junior High School Students in Ghana. The study employed a descriptive, cross-sectional survey design. The population for the study comprised all JHS students and teachers in the Aboom Circuit of the Cape Coast Metropolis. Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sampling table, Purposive and randomly sampling techniques were used to select schools, teachers and students for the study. The sample frame for the study was all students and teachers in the five selected JHS of the Aboom Circuit of the Cape Coast Metropolis. The sample size for the study was 350 for students and 30 for teachers. The main instrument for data collection for the study as questionnaire. Research question was analysed using mean and standard deviation; hypothesis was analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The study revealed that continued, consistent and persistent presence of these student-related factors such as hunger, lack of self-motivation, poor study habit, watching TV, laziness, and students’ truancy or absenteeism negatively affect students’ academic achievement. The results of the study also indicated that there was a moderate, negative correlation between student-related factors and students’ academic achievement with high levels of perceived student-related factors with low levels of students’ academic achievement. It is recommended that, the role of guidance and counseling session in schools is to assists students to be focused on their studies. Therefore, guidance and counseling sessions in various schools should be effectively organised to prevent students’ truancy. It is also recommended that School administrators in partnership with PTA leadership and NGOs should educate students on the relevance of education and give social support to students from low socio-economic backgrounds and motivate them in their studies.

Introduction: One Key Question® is a patient-centered tool that seeks to understand patient pregnancy intention and counseling. This pilot study aimed to assess implementation of OKQ at an urban healthcare facility and improve understanding of short interpregnancy intervals (IPI). Methods: We describe the implementation of OKQ in our setting using the Diffusion of Innovation Theory as a framework. We broke this up into two phases – the first to assess provider acceptance of the OKQ integration into the clinic workflow and the second to assess how well documentation of OKQ answers occurred in our EMR. Results: Most providers in the first phase reported awareness of the inclusion of OKQ in the EHR, yet most physician providers reported only using OKQ at “some visits” (n=5) compared to the MAs, who reported using OKQ at “every visit” (n=8). Most providers felt that OKQ was an effective method of providing preconception and contraception care for women of reproductive age (n=10). Sixty-four patients completed a survey on OKQ after their visit who identified as young (mean age 28.7), either Black (46.9%) or Hispanic (51.6%) and pregnant (61%). Of those, 83% reported that they were not asked OKQ and 42% reported receiving counseling on optimal IPI. In those patients, 78% had documentation of usage of OKQ in the medical record. Discussion: The implementation of OKQ provided an opportunity to provide standardized preconception and contraception care to our patient population and improve information regarding short IPI. However, challenges existed in implementation which much be overcome to benefit from OKQ. Significance: OKQ has been used successfully in primary care and other settings to assess pregnancy intentions. This article adds to the literature by investigating the implementation of OKQ in a low-resource setting during prenatal and gynecology care. It shares struggles of implementing OKQ in an electronic medical record and how to roll out this program in a setting where pregnancy intention already is including in various forms by our providers.
